Job Overview

The Communications Officer is responsible for overseeing all communications externally of the organization. The Communications Officer is the primary media point person for external inquiries not limited to the press, partners, and sponsors. The Communications Officer is also responsible for overseeing all of the organization's social media content and will work to market and brand Oakland Mills United outside of the organization. The Communications Officer serves as the organization's marketing point person. 

 

Reports To

The Communications Officer will report to the Executive Director & Chief Executive Officer

 

Time Commitment

This role requires between 2-15 hours per MONTH

 

Preferred/Required Experiences 

  • This position will provide a full press and public affairs experience and will allow for to pitch reporters, place stories, manage press lists, and other press and public relations tasks. Individuals interested in journalism, press, communications, and or marketing preferred, but open to all candidates. 

  • Must be in high school or above 

 

Core Responsibilities and Duties

  • Drafting and sending out newsletters.

  • Assisting with the creation of organization memos, reports, and other publications. 

  • Responsible for managing the Oakland Mills United newsroom, including writing and publishing updates and stories. 

  • The primary contact person for all communication related materials outside of the organization. 

  • Creating and sending out press releases. 

  • Working with the press to push out stories about what the organization is working on.

  • Assisting with answering any inquiries and messages that are sent to the organization through the website, email, or mail. 

  • Managing the Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter accounts.

  • Help create marketing campaigns and branding of the organization through social media

Founded in 2020, Oakland Mills United (OMU) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization on a mission to support and empower students, schools, and communities through education, enrichment, and student well-being.

The living legacy of the OMHS Class of 2020, OMU strives to create a more equitable community for all. Our initiatives of student leadership, student enrichment, college preparation, and community advocacy create opportunities to support all students in Oakland Mills and Howard County.

We are run by a volunteer staff who are current HCPSS students, alumni, and community members who strive to make an impact in our community for future generations.
